Hey Hey! Lesson 1: This is a fairly standard exercise to work on a couple of key ideas. Finger co-ordination, hammer-ons/pull-offs and phrasing (The tab key is located at the bottom). I'm kind of new to the Bucket O' Tab so I'll explain a little more about things. The "v" indicates a downstroke pick, then the "h" indicates a hammer-on (ie. after picking the first note leave the note fretted and hit the next note without picking it). A pull-off is a logical ending to a hammer-on, simply put when you release the hammered note move the finger tip a little towards the ground (down) and let go. The little snap will let the note, that is still being held prior to the hammer, to ring. Figure 1: The rhythm is in triplets. Instead of tapping your foot and going 1...2...3...4 as quarter notes would go, think of having three notes sounding per tap of the foot. 1-trip-let, 2-trip-let, 3-trip-let, 4-trip-let, etc. Start it slow and work up the speed gradually. The fingering should be 1 2 4 2 1 3. Use that pinky or it will fall off :-) Each note should sound off clearly but please feel free to crank up your favorite distortion pedal (I wouldn't have it any other way). Remember: If your wrist starts to hurt STOP! Check on how you are holding the neck if its not comfortable its not fun! v v E-----------------------------|| B---5h6h8p6p5---5h6p5h6p5-----|| G-----------h7-----------h7--*|| D----------------------------*|| A-----------------------------|| E-----------------------------|| Figure 1. After you have ran through the above enough time to make your Mom crazy move it around (up and down the neck) As we don't care about the scale (for now) just keep the finger spacing the same try it on the 7th fret on the B string then on the 3rd fret. Cool, Eh? The next exercise will work that ole pinky. Pick only the first note (A) and the rest will be hammers and pulls)as in the first exercise. Think triplets 1-trip-let, 2-trip-let, etc..... v E---5----7----8----7----5----------|| B----------------------------8-----|| G---------------------------------*|| D---------------------------------*|| A----------------------------------|| E----------------------------------|| Figure 2. Move the bad boy up to the 7th fret and repeat then proceed to the third. When you get comfortable try mixing up patterns 1 and 2 when at the same starting fret. Begin slow and work up the speed. Feel free to ask a question! or make a suggestion!
