Lesson 1 (Distortion is good!).
First Tip: Pedals (I love 'em) The DOD Grunge is IMHO the best bang per buck! You should be able to pick
up one from Ebay (Grunge Pedal Search).
Next, find a EQ pedal (I prefer the Boss GE-7) and scoop the controls ("v" shape).
This will help you get started in finding a livable "Metal" sound!!!!
There are some boneheads that will complain about this pedal but for $20 it sounds good through a bedroom amp
which is what most practice through. I am saving to try a tri metal though :-)
Tip Two: Palm mute the strings! I hope most of you have a Floyd Rose or a Kahler trem installed.
For me this style of bridge is more comfortable to palm mute. That is, gently resting your
fleshy part of the outside of your palm against the strings. Practice in a comfortable
position and vary the degree of pressure. By varying the pressure you should be able
to find the correct amount for actually hearing the note sound and keeping the rest quite.
A side benefit is now you can also make a good chunka-chunka sound for rythym :-)Again remember
distortion is your friend!!!
Tip Three: Practice Practice Practice - I am not great but through practice will get better. Strech out before playing.
Do your 1-2-3-4 fingering excercises slowly and work up to speed. You will not notice it at first but record yourself
tonight - mark the tape and stash it. Three months from now dig it out and listen - are you better? Damn right!!!
